![]() The first novel in English to focus on Ethiopia was a translation of the 3rd-cent. ![]() ![]() Many of the histories and geographies translated from Latin in the 15th and 16th cents. Another early manuscript is the translation of Historia Trium Regum, as The Three Kings of Cologne, an extremely popular text of the late 1300s, with garbled information about Prester John, Saba, and “Ethiopes”. In it, “Ethioppe” is described as “moste habundante in miracles” and threaded by the Nile. The first known reference to“Ethiopia” in English texts is found in John of Trevisa’s translation in 1387 of Ranulf Higden’s Polychronicon, a theological history of the world in Latin and one of the first books ever printed (in 1482). ![]() Writing until 1800 Ethiopia makes an appearance very early in English literature. ![]()
